Food & Lifestyle Photography

I create visual assets that tell the story and illustrate the soul of top-flight food and hospitality businesses. My photography gently lifts the veil and invites the viewer into the heart of some of the world’s finest restaurants and boutique hotels, representing their essence across print and digital media platforms.

My journey in the industry began simply by washing pots in UK kitchens when I was travelling. The appeal of the companionable toil of a chef’s life kept me in kitchens a little longer than expected until I ended up as Head Pastry Chef of Le Quartier Francais. Photography found me wondering what it all meant, struggling with a deep desire to create and express beauty in the world and the certainty that I wanted to inhale the essence of every kitchen.

From the moment I focused a lens on the hidden kitchen world, my journey as an artist began. Today I craft individual, deeply personal stories about the industry through intimate portrayals of special places for books, magazines and a host of digital publications. As well as media outlets, I provide a service for hospitality clients and their businesses. Each is presented with an archive that holds a collection of images, including menu items, interiors and exteriors, portraiture, drinks, ambience shots, service action, kitchen scenes and highly ‘emotive’ photos of what it is like to be in the space they have curated.

As a specialist hospitality industry photographer, I weave the story of a business through packages that include multiple versions of each subject. There is always ample material for use across media platforms without tiresome repetition. Having built my own business through visual media, I can offer guidance and planned solutions for how to utilise quality imagery within the digital marketing matrix effectively.

I am based in the South African city of Cape Town but travel globally on assignment.

 Portrait Photography

My fascination with the beauty of the human face, and its micro-expressions that reveal authenticity led me to start photographing people I met. Many were chefs, so there was an easy rapport to start with, but I have come to love capturing a snippet of a person’s life through photography. It is a privilege for me to show my subject the beauty present in them. Emotive portraiture, fantasy portraiture and personal portfolios are my specialities. Setting people at ease in portrait sessions can result in deep discussions about the nature of being, and I treasure these almost as much as the images we create together.

Flowing from this, it stands to reason that family photography has become an abiding passion. I absolutely love just observing a family doing what they do at home, capturing fleeting moments that reveal closeness and the depth of their connection. I love to explore visually what it means to dwell within the embrace of family. I take particular delight in capturing images of children. Child portraiture is incredibly rewarding because of the very short and precious time that we are children, full of curious innocence and playful energy.
